Antoine Griezmann's latest move confirms the end of Manchester United's interest
Antoine Griezmann will sign a new contract with Ateltico Madrid after confirming his commitment to the club, according to fresh reports in Spain.
Manchester United appeared to give up their high profile pursuit of Griezmann on Thursday, as they claimed they had ‘cooled’ their interest in the France striker who was a €100m target for the Old Trafford club.
While United may have wanted the football world to believe they had opted to walk away from a deal for Griezmann, the reality was that their chief transfer target decided he could not leave Atletico Madrid after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld their transfer embargo on Thursday.
Reports in Spain suggest United were aware that Griezmann would not move this summer and leave Atletico without a lead striker if the appeal against their transfer embargo as not lifted.
Now Atletico look set to reward Griezmann’s for his loyalty by handing him a bumper new contract, with AS reporting the Frenchman will pen a new deal - which may increase the €100m release clause in his current deal - in the coming weeks.
Atletico are also looking to finalise a new deal for veteran striker Fernando Torres, with their plans to try and sign Chelsea forward Deigo Costa on hold for now.
Meanwhile, reports in Italy claim that United will finalise their first big signing of the summer as they close in on a deal for Inter Milan’s Croatian winger Ivan Perisic, with a fee in the region of €50m believed to be under discussion.
