Aiden McGeady set to seal loan move away from Everton
Republic of Ireland winger Aiden McGeady is closing in on a loan move from Everton to Sheffield Wednesday, but Darron Gibson may be set to stay at Goodison Park for the rest of this season.
McGeady is eager to leave Everton before the 11pm transfer deadline on Monday, as he looks to give himself a chance of pushing for a place in Ireland’s Euro 2016 squad next summer.
Yet after no Premier League clubs expressed a firm interest in signing McGeady, the former Celtic winger has been forced to consider a loan move to the Championship division and a move to Hillsborough is all-but agreed after the player underwent a medical on Sunday evening.
Leeds and Blackburn were also interested in signing the player, but Indepdenent.ie understands that McGeady was not keen to make a temporary move to Spain after interest from La Liga side Sevilla last week.
The news is not so positive for Gibson, who played in the closing stages of Everton’s 3-0 FA Cup win over Carlisle on Sunday.
Like McGeady, Republic of Ireland midfielder Gibson has been told that he can leave Everton on loan this month, but there has been a lack of interest in the former Manchester United star.
Everton have held “tentative talks” with clubs interested in Gibson, but they are awaiting to see if those discussions lead to a concrete offer ahead of the 11pm deadline.
