Agreement reached between Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid for Toby Alderweireld
Tottenham have reached agreement with Atlético Madrid on the £11.5 million signing of Toby Alderweireld but the deal still hinges on talks between the Spanish club and Southampton over a compensation clause.
Southampton had the option to sign Alderweireld permanently for just under £7 million unless they were paid around £2 million to cancel the agreement and still believe that, legally, the player should be theirs.
Tottenham regard the dispute as being between Atletico and Southampton and are pressing ahead with the deal regardless and, while Alderweireld is understood to have undergone a medical and be keen to join Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, the clause dispute must still be resolved.
Southampton did complete the signing of defender Cuco Martinez from Twente yesterday and arrived in Austria for their pre-season training camp. Morgan Schneiderlin was part of the travelling squad after Southampton turned down a £20 million bid from Manchester United.
