Transfer Watch: City swoop for Ansaldi to patch up defence

MANCHESTER City are on the verge of a deal to sign Cristian Ansaldi for £4m from Rubin Kazan. The Argentina left-back has helped his team to win consecutive Russian titles since moving from Newell's Old Boys two years ago.

He would become the third left- back the club have signed in the past year. Sylvinho, who joined last summer, has been deputising in that position recently as Wayne Bridge has been out with a knee injury.

West Ham United have inquired about taking James Beattie on loan, but Stoke City will consider only a permanent transfer. West Ham have made Julien Faubert available for sale and lined up several options as a replacement at right-back -- Francois Clerc, of Lyons, Alan Hutton, of Spurs, and Andreas Gorlitz, of Bayern Munich.

Sunderland are close to a £3m agreement with Schalke to sign Kevin Kuranyi, but the wage demands of the Germany forward, whose contract expires at the end of the season, have delayed the deal.

Maynor Figueroa is the first-choice target of Steve Bruce, but the Sunderland boss is not prepared to pay the £7m that Wigan are demanding.

Bologna have made an inquiry about taking Federico Macheda on loan from Manchester United. The 18-year-old Italian forward has not appeared in the Premier League this season, but Alex Ferguson would be reluctant to loan him out, despite having completed the signing of Mame Biram Diouf, the Senegal forward, from Molde, of Norway. Diouf (22) arrived in Manchester on Monday and has received international clearance to make his first-team debut.

Willo Flood is locked in discussions with Middlesbrough about a permanent switch from Glasgow Celtic, although the deal has been held up as it's tied in with other transactions between the two clubs. Former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan wants to bring the Dublin-born midfielder down south, and is also trying to secure deals for Gary Caldwell and Barry Robson. Flood is keen to move, but his situation will be affected by how moves for the other pair pan out.

Irish striker Caleb Folan is set to join QPR on loan. Folan returned to parent club Hull City last month after his temporary move to Middlesbrough.

Dead certs

Wigan have completed the signing of Vladimir Stojkovic on loan from Sporting after the goalkeeper received his work permit, while Wigan have not ruled out a move for Scott McDonald.
