Toffees put the seal on £5m Kone swoop
Everton will today announce the signing of Ivorian striker Arouna Kone on a £5m three-year deal.
The Toffees have seen off late competition from Newcastle United to secure the services of Kone, who was one of the bright lights of Wigan's 2012/13 campaign, which ended in their relegation to the Championship.
The Goodison Park club are still determined that they will not allow Leighton Baines to leave for Manchester United, who may come in with a second £15m bid before leaving for their pre-season tour of Australia and the Far East this week.
Even a bid closer to £20m would not need to be accepted if Marouane Fellaini leaves for closer to £23m.
The powerful Belgian, who was Everton's leading scorer last season with 12 goals, has a clause which would allow him to speak with any club that bids £23.5m and it is understood that he wants to leave. Despite their initial informal inquiries, Arsenal are yet to trigger the clause, which expires at the end of the month.
Brazil midfielder Paulinho has completed his £17m move from Corinthians to Tottenham Hotspur.
USA international goalkeeper Brad Guzan has agreed a new four-year deal with Aston Villa that will keep him at the Premier League club to the end of the 2016/17 season.
former Derry City midfielder Paddy McCourt is facing a decision between Championship side Birmingham City and MLS outfit San Jose Earthquakes as he weighs up his next move after his release from Celtic.
