Toffees lead race to land striker Kone

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan claims that Everton manager and former Latics boss Roberto Martinez is the favourite to sign striker Arouna Kone from the relegated side despite bids from two other clubs.

Whelan is keen to hang on to his other key players – especially midfielder James McCarthy – to give new boss Owen Coyle every chance of getting back in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Martinez has been reunited with key members of his Wigan back-room staff after a deal was completed to take assistant boss Graeme Jones, chief scout Kevin Reeves and goalkeeping coach Inaki Bergara to Goodison.


Former Ireland international Lee Carsley has left Coventry City to become assistant manager to former Everton team-mate David Weir at Sheffield United.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes has made his second signing since arriving at the club, bringing in defender Marc Muniesa from Barcelona. Muniesa (21) helped Spain to last month's European U-21 Championship title.

Swansea have signed Spanish midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo from Real Betis for an undisclosed fee. The Swans now have nine Spanish players in their first-team squad.

Former England manager Steve McClaren has been appointed to Harry Redknapp's back-room staff at Queens Park Rangers. McClaren has been out of the game since his second spell with Twente ended in February.

In the League of Ireland, Shamrock Rovers have allowed striker Ciaran Kilduff move to Cork City on loan for the rest of the season, while Dundalk have signed Francis McCaffrey from Hull City and midfielder Jordan Keegan from St Pat's. Conor Murphy has left the Saints to join Bohemians.


Paris Saint-Germain have joined the ongoing auction for Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani with a £43m bid. However, Napoli are holding out for £54m in cash and have already rejected an offer of £43m plus Fernando Torres from Chelsea.

QPR centre-back Chris Samba (29) is on the verge of re-joining Anzhi Makhachkala for £12m, the same price the relegated R's are believed to have forked out for him in January.

Kevin Phillips (39) wants to sign a new deal at Crystal Palace and have one final crack at the Premier League after scoring the extra-time play-off final penalty against Watford that took Ian Holloway's side into the top flight.

Le Havre full-back Benjamin Mendy (18) is closing to a move to Sunderland despite having been linked with Arsenal, Lyon and Marseille this summer.


AC Milan have insisted Stephan El Shaarawy will not leave the club this summer. The 20-year-old has reportedly attracted interest from Manchester City and Chelsea after scoring 16 league goals in his second full season with the Serie A giants and breaking into the Italian national team.

"Stephan has reiterated his determination to continue playing for the Rossoneri. No more talk of the transfer market, no more rumours," said a club statement.
