Toddler scribbles deal

Lionel Messi may have stolen the headlines but another miniature football star shot to fame this week.

A one and a half-year-old Dutch footballer Baerke van der Meij became a YouTube sensation after his father Jorg posted a video of the toddler shooting balls into his toy box last week.

On Wednesday, Baerke's local club VVV Venlo signed the prodigy up to a 10-year token contract.

The Eredivisie strugglers wanted the toddler to attend the game with Heerenveen last weekend but their 7.45 kick-off was too late for the little Dutch master so a press conference was organised where Baerke put crayon to paper to keep up the family's connection with the club his grandfather played for.

"The toddler's favourite position has not yet been determined.

"But we can speak of a right-footed player with a very good kicking technique, perseverance and, importantly, football genes via his grandfather," the club said in a statement. tinyurl.com/66d2xa5
