who has more goals – Robbie Keane or the rest of the ireland squad combined?
WE HAVE been here before but Friday night's defeat again underlined just how important Robbie Keane is to Ireland's cause as he notched his 60th goal in 128 international appearances.
In the absence of Kevin Doyle, who has scored 12 times in 53 appearances, the goals gap between Keane and the rest of the squad widened even further on Friday night, despite the fact that the combined cap tally of the rest of the outfield squad is over 350 more than Keane.
Excluding the three goalkeepers and Keane, the other 19 players now have 494 appearances between them but have managed just 33 goals, with the nine of Shane Long (right) from 38 making him the second top scorer, and Richard Dunne's tally of eight in third place.
The gap could close if a few more players were to be called into the squad; however, it would require the return of Aiden McGeady (two goals) as well as Doyle (12), Andy Reid (four) and Clinton Morrison (nine) to make up the 27-goal shortfall between Keane and the rest of the squad.
