Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has served up a stinging attack on Louis van Gaal's Champions League flops after accusing them of lacking passion and character.

United crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday night after losing their final group game against Wolfsburg in Germany and Keane has offered a predictably harsh assessment of their efforts.

“They have a lot of good players, there is no getting away from that, but they are not good enough for Man Utd,” Keane told ITV Sport.

“You look at the recruitment and they have thrown decent money at it, but they have no special players at the moment. You always associated United with one or two special players who can produce.

“They seem to be lacking a few characters, a few leaders. You look at the goals they conceded (against Wolfsburg) and it’s not good enough."

Keane insisted under-fire manager Louis van Gaal was not the only reason why United are struggling to impress this season, as he suggested some players are hiding when it matters most.

“The manager is getting a lot of criticism and a lot of the players are hiding behind that," he added.

"People talking about the tactics and the systems. Forget about tactics and systems when you look at the goals they conceded. That was just about players not doing their jobs.

“It was a disaster for them last night when you consider the goals they gave away. It’s about passion, desire, you are a Man Utd player.

“At Man Utd, you need certain characters and they are lacking characters more than anything else."

United will look to bounce back from their Champions League misery when they take on Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.
