'The contract does not mean anything' - Zinedine Zidane defends Real Madrid players after latest draw

Zinedine Zidane has defended Real Madrid's form but admits his contract offers no guarantees for his long-term future at the club.

Real drew 2-2 with Numancia in the second leg of their Copa del Rey tie, advancing to the quarter-finals having won the first leg 3-0.

It was a second successive draw for Zidane's men, and Barcelona's 3-0 win in the Bernabeu before Christmas means the away game with Numancia is their only win in their last four games.

Zidane said in a press conference reported by AS: "You can think of it as a bad game or whatever you want but we are convinced we will move forward."

Asked about his contract, he added: "It is already signed. I have until 2020.

"I go match by match, year by year, like last year. I cannot look two or three years ahead because having the contract does not mean anything."

Lucas Vazquez twice gave Real the lead on Wednesday evening but Guillermo Fernandez equalised on each occasion, just before half-time and again in the 83rd minute before the visitors had Dani Calvo sent off in stoppage time.

Zidane said: "I'm happy with the tie (overall), the first leg was important. The downside was the goals before the break and at the end.

"It is not easy for players who play a bit less, maybe we ran out of gas. We faced opponents who run until the end and if you physically drop a bit that can happen.

"But apart from that I think it was a good game. The draw is not the best result but you do not have to go crazy."
