Swansea boss Paul Clement backs Tammy Abraham to break into England squad
Tammy Abraham has been backed to break into the England senior squad by his Swansea boss Paul Clement.
The on-loan Chelsea striker took his Premier League tally for the season to four with a brace in the 2-0 home win over Huddersfield on Saturday.
The England under-21 international last month refuted reports that he was considering switching his allegiance to Nigeria, who he qualifies for through his father.
Asked if he was now capable of stepping into Gareth Southgate's England squad, Clement said: "Why not?
"He is getting this experience here with us, he is here for this season and he has a great opportunity to make that step.
"Maybe we can help him to make that step to play for his parent club in the future and from there to be recognised at international level.
"We have good, young players out there who can represent England - why can't Alfie Mawson or Tom Carroll do it in the future?
"But they have to focus on doing their job for this club first and things can come from there."
Abraham turned 20 at the start of the month and has made only two substitute appearances for Chelsea.
B ut he has already started to make a name for himself in south Wales after a prolific spell in the Sky Bet Championship at Bristol City last season.
The only Englishmen to score more Premier League goals than him this term are Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Jamie Vardy.
"You don't see many 20-year-olds playing in the Premier Legaue and scoring goals," Clement said.
"But he has a lot of belief in himself and I got a sense of that when I was trying to bring him to the club in the summer.
"He has got all the physical attributes and ultimately he is a goalscorer.
"He has shown already he can score goals at this level and four in eight games is not a bad return by any means."
