Swans clip Magpies' wings
Swansea City 3 Newcastle United 0
Two home wins in their last 12 Premier League games was hardly what Swansea manager Michael Laudrup had been planning. Still, his was the widest smile in south Wales as a depleted Swansea side defied the escalating odds to end Newcastle's impressive recent run.
Already without Michu and Wilfried Bony, Laudrup saw his one remaining genuine striker hobble off after 27 minutes with a groin injury.
The loss of Alvaro Vazquez left Swansea short in the final third where Newcastle United had few problems in keeping Alejandro Pozuelo and Nathan Dyer quiet. That was until the latter finally broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time. Pablo Hernandez and Alejandro Pozuelo combined on the left and when Tim Krul palmed Pozuelo's cross to Dyer, the diminutive winger volleyed home.
Swansea doubled their lead 24 minutes from time when Pozuelo sent Jonjo Shelvey clear. Krul denied Shelvey, but the rebound struck Mathieu Debuchy and rolled into an empty net.
Shelvey's 25-yard drive sealed victory for Swansea and though the injury to Vazquez will leave Laudrup even shorter when it comes to picking his forward line, for the time being it is time to celebrate. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
