Super subs earn Ireland point

U-19 IRELAND 2
U-19 GERMANY 2

IRELAND scored twice in three second-half minutes to complete a stirring comeback and earn a draw with Germany in Grevenmacher in the concluding game of their UEFA U-19 Championship qualifying group.

The Germans were two up within half an hour, with Samed Yesil, Liverpool's €1m signing from Bayer Leverkusen, scoring their second.

Sam Byrne reduced the arrears 13 minutes after the restart and fellow substitute Ryan Coombes hit the equaliser on the hour mark, just two minutes after joining the action.

Both teams had already qualified for the elite phase of the qualifiers next spring, but pride was still very much at stake, and goalkeeper Ian Lawlor kept Ireland on terms with a string of top saves late on to ensure that Paul Doolin's charges ended the first stage of their campaign unbeaten.

IRELAND -- Lawlor (Man City); Baba (Castlebar Celtic), Smith (Leicester), Sweeney (Reading), Griffin (Reading); Miele (Newcastle), Gallagher (Burnley), Sadlier (West Ham); Drennan (Aston Villa), Wilkinson (Millwall), Garmston (WBA). Subs: Byrne (Man United) for Garmston (h-t), Coombes (St Pat's Ath) for Wilkinson (58), Dillon (Hull) for Miele (81).
