Sunderland v West Brom - Story of the match

Patrick van Aanholt came off the bench to relieve the pressure on manager David Moyes as Sunderland collected just their second point of the season in a 1-1 draw against West Brom.

The Black Cats were trailing to Nacer Chadli's 35th-minute opener with seven minutes remaining when Van Aanholt, who was withdrawn from the side to face Tottenham just minutes before kick-off on the advice of a cardiologist, bundled the ball home to level.

He immediately ran to the touchline to celebrate with club doctor Ishtiaq Rehman, who is understood to be working his notice after tendering his resignation earlier this week.

"1-1 at Full time. A point against West Brom at home! Living the dream. Still, a good comeback and a nice feeling" - Sunderland fanzine A Love Supreme.

Nacer Chadli was at the centre of most of West Brom's best work and having already forced a good save from Jordan Pickford, he gave the keeper no chance with an assured left-foot finish.

Jermain Defoe's goals have proved invaluable to Sunderland since his arrival from Toronto and he had good reason to be frustrated last weekend when his double against Crystal Palace counted for nothing. But he should really have fired the Black Cats ahead from Duncan Watmore's defence-splitting fourth-minute pass.

It has been a difficult few weeks for Patrick van Aanholt, who was withdrawn from the Sunderland team to face Tottenham minutes before kick-off on the advice of a cardiologist before a photograph of him apparently smoking a shisha pipe was published by a tabloid newspaper. In the circumstances, his late equaliser represented a welcome change of fortunes.
