Stephanie Roche: Hopefully Enda Kenny will give me a lift to the White House on Paddy's Day!
Ireland's golden girl to meet Barack Obama on March 17
The Puskas Goal of the Year runner-up has received a formal invite to meet with the President of America, Barack Obama, for the annual gathering on March 17.
It's a busy time for Independent.ie columnist Roche. On Monday, she jets off to Croatia with the Ireland team before she makes the move to her new club Houston Dash on March 13.
Two days later, Roche will be at another ceremony in Texas for the opening of the new Irish Consulate General offices in Austin where she will be joined by Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
"Enda will be at the ceremony in Texas on the 15th so maybe I can get a lift down to the White House with him," joked Stephanie.
"But seriously, what an honour it is to be going to the White House to meet Barack Obama. It is something I knew about a couple of weeks ago and it has just been confirmed so I am thrilled. It is a busy time for me and I am really looking to getting settled in Houston with the new club."
Roche has been in demand since she made international headlines for her stunning wonder strike for Peamount United against Wexford Youths in October 2013, a goal that propelled her onto the international stage when she was shortlisted for the coveted Puskas Goal of the Year award.
That list included household names Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Diego Costa but such was the quality of Roche’s strike, she made it to the top three with Robin van Persie and Rodriguez.
Roche attended the glitzy Ballon d’Or awards ceremony alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi where she finished second to Rodriguez by just 9pc of the vote.
