FC Midtjylland 6 Derry City 1
It will be mission impossible for Derry City in Sligo next week as they were outclassed by FC Midtjylland in Denmark last night.
Derry went behind just three minutes in as Jakob Poulson chipped in a free-kick and defender Marc Dal Hende headed down past Gerard Doherty.
Derry responded well but another Midtjylland corner caught the visitors cold again on 14 minutes.
Visiting manager Kenny Shiels could only look on in disbelief as his team conceded from another set play, Kristian Riis scuffing in Poulsen's corner with not a Derry shirt in sight.
With half-time approaching, Midtjylland added another goal to their tally.
Ben Doherty, in attempting to block a through-ball, only succeed in diverting it to Rilwan Hassan, who played Paul Onuachu in on goal. Onuachu, who had just hit the bar with a header, was too quick for Doherty this time, and the keeper brought him down for a simple penalty decision for referee Markus Hameter.
Poulsen calmly stepped up and sent Doherty the wrong way from the spot, and the hosts went into the break with the job already done.
Midtjylland made it 4-0 just before the hour as Dal Hende played a sensational ball in behind the Derry defence and Simon Kroon latched onto it before scooping it past Doherty and into the net.
Within two minutes, it was 5-0 and Kroon was in again, all alone to pick his spot as he rolled in his second, and the final whistle could not come quickly enough for Derry, who looked a spent force.
However, the Candystripes refused to throw in the towel and on 65 minutes they grabbed a consolation goal. Defender Riis dallied on the ball in his own penalty area and Nathan Boyle pounced, squaring the ball across to Ronan Curtis, who lashed it in.
The game was end to end in the closing stages as both sides forgot about defending, and Aaron McEneff almost scored a spectacular goal when he struck the crossbar from 30 yards, before man of the match Poulsen struck the base of the post as the hosts threatened a sixth.
But ultimately it was comfortable for Midtjylland and they scored again substitute Bozhidar Kraev found the corner from 18 yards to set up a comfortable trip to Ireland next week.
