SSE Airtricity League Premier Division clubs Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic have been handed tough Europa League preliminary round draws after being paired with Scandinavian clubs following today's draw.

Both Dublin clubs face uphill tasks in their first preliminary round clashes as Rovers go up against Norwegian side SK Brann, while St Pat's will face top Swedish side IFK Norrkoping.

Cork City, meanwhile, await the winners of the preliminary round clash between Luxembourg's FC Progrès Niederkorn or Welsh side Cardiff Metropolitan University.

While St Pat's were hoping for a logistically better draw against Scottish Premiership outfit Aberdeen, they will now come up against Swedish opposition for the first time since they shocked IF Elfsborg, beating them 4-3 on aggregate back in 2008.

The Hoops, meanwhile, were beaten 2-1 on aggregate by Swedish side AIK in last year's Europa League first qualifying round and last faced Norwegian opponents in 2015 when they went down 4-1 on aggeegate to Odds BK.

The ties are due to take place on July 11 and 18, details of home and away legs will be announced in due course.
