New Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores hopes to create "something special" during his first season in the Barclays Premier League.

The Spanish former Atletico Madrid boss was appointed by the Hornets earlier this month after it was decided not to renew the contract of Slavisa Jokanovic, who had guided the club to automatic promotion and since taken over at Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Sanchez Flores, who guided Atletico to Europa League success in 2010, is confident he can have an instant impact as Watford look to upset the form book and extend their stay the top flight.

Speaking to the club's official website,, he said: "I was reading about Watford and their history, which is very important to know when you join a new club. I know they have big stories.

"I know about people like Elton John and what he did years ago and Watford have had important players like John Barnes playing at this club as well.

"So it is special to come here and to go into the Premier League, I know that. I feel a passion for my work and I want that to transmit to the fans and players.

"In my mind I have an idea of the new team, of Watford. I will work very hard to achieve something special."

Sanchez Flores, 50, stressed the importance of building on last season's team spirit.

"For me the most important thing is the sensation you transmit to the fans, you must connect with the people from Watford and the players," he added.

"I always want to improve and create something special on the pitch. The idea is to create a team the fans can connect with."

Watford have already made moves to strengthen the squad, with the free transfer signing of Austrian defender Sebastian Prodl and Lithuanian goalkeeper Giedrius Arlauskis, with more movement expected ahead of the new campaign.
