Gareth Bale finally made his mark at Real Madrid, only for Cristiano Ronaldo to upstage his two-goal performance with a hat-trick in a 7-3 victory over Sevilla.

The Welshman capped his first league start at the Bernabeu by scoring twice and setting up two more. Ronaldo passed Ferenc Puskas to go fifth in league goals scored for Madrid with 157.

Karim Benzema capped the 10-goal thriller with his second goal, while Ivan Rakitic scored twice for Sevilla but sent a penalty – the third of the match – into the stands with a hat-trick beckoning.

In Italy, Napoli moved within two points of Serie A leaders Roma as they won a bad-tempered contest 2-1 at Fiorentina. Juventus are also two points back after a 4-0 win over Catania.
