A late double from Cristiano Ronaldo put the gloss on a stuttering performance from Real Madrid as they beat Celta Vigo 3-0 in La Liga.

With Ronaldo unusually quiet and record signing Gareth Bale on the bench, Real were frustrated by a Celta side who had several chances to score before Karim Benzema finally broke the deadlock midway through the second half.

Ronaldo poked in Real's second after 82 minutes and then thumped in his second of the night from substitute Bale's cross for the 400th goal of his career.

Inter Milan lost ground in their bid to qualify for the Champions League when they lost 1-0 to Lazio, Miroslav Klose's late goal handing the Romans a deserved victory.

Inter are now eight points behind Napoli, who closed the gap on second-placed Roma to just two points with a 2-0 home triumph over Sampdoria.

Kaka notched his 100th goal for AC Milan in their 3-0 win over Atalanta at the San Siro. The Brazilian scored twice, his first allowing him to reach the landmark.

Eleven-time winner Stephane Peterhansel of France took the overall lead in the car division of the Dakar Rally, winning the second stage of the gruelling race. Peterhansel leads the overall car standings by 28 seconds.

Sam Sunderland of Britain won the bikes stage, with Francisco Lopez of Chile 39 seconds behind. Spain's Joan Barreda Bort held the overall lead, 2:03 in front of Lopez.
