Newcastle United are facing a further supporters' backlash after confirming that a St James' Park bar dedicated to Alan Shearer is to be refurbished, with the former England captain's name to be removed as part of the redevelopment.

Shearer's Bar, which was opened in December 2004 in a tribute to the club's record goalscorer, who surpassed Jackie Milburn by scoring 206 goals during his 10-year spell on Tyneside, is to become the 'Nine' bar as part of plans to update facilities at the stadium.

The signage at the bar was removed before Shearer's highly critical newspaper column yesterday in which he condemned the appointment of Joe Kinnear.

Having failed to save Newcastle from relegation to the Championship during a brief reign as caretaker manager at the end of the 2008-09 season, Shearer has endured a turbulent relationship with the hierarchy of the club due to previous outspoken comments about the regime of owner Mike Ashley.
