Aston Villa’s winger Ashley Young signed a five-year contract with Manchester United today after the clubs agreed a fee.
The 25-year-old England international had a medical yesterday and the transfer - reported to be in the region of £20m - was finalised today.
He becomes Alex Ferguson’s second big signing of the summer. He has already signed England Under-21 international Phil Jones from Blackburn.
Young had joined Villa from Watford four years ago in a deal eventually worth £10m.
He scored 38 goals in just under 200 appearances.
Young had resisted pressure from Villa to sign an extension to his contract, which was due to expire next summer.
The club felt they had little alternative but to sell him.
“Ashley has made a terrific contribution for Villa over the past four and a half seasons and everyone at the club wishes him the best for the future,” said new Villa manager Alex McLeish.
“I’m sure he will be looking forward to this new challenge.”
