Republic of Ireland international Shane Long has been rewarded for his impressive form after picking up the April award for Southampton Player of the Month.

The Tipperary native, who picked up the same award in December, scored twice, in the  3-1 win over Newcastle and the 4-2 victory at Aston Villa, and chipped in with three assists in April and tormented Spurs much-vaunted centre-half pairing of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen in the 2-1 success at White Hart Lane yesterday.

“I’m delighted,” Long told Southampton’s official YouTube channel. "We’re on a good run at the moment and playing some good football.

"I’ve managed to chip in with a few goals. I’m feeling good on the pitch and it’s nice that the fans are showing faith in me and giving me this award.

“There’s 30,000-odd coming here every week to watch and they’re no fools. They know the game, and when they pick you out as a stand-out player it’s always an honour."

Long added: "We’re still in contention to get into that European spot and we’ve got nothing to lose. I think a club like Southampton deserves Europe, so we’ll do our best to try and get us there."
