1992: Appointed manager of Millwall.

1994: Takes Millwall to the play-offs after finishing third, but they fall to Derby at the semi final stage.

1996: Leaves The Den to become manager of Ireland.

2003: Takes over a struggling Sunderland side in March and is unable to prevent relegation to the Championship.

2004: Sunderland reach the play-offs but fall at that hurdle to miss out on an immediate return.

2005: Leads Sunderland to the Championship title in some style.

2006: Starved of funds, he suffers a dreadful return to the Premier League and is sacked with ten games to go with relegation assured.

2007: After taking over as manager of Wolves, he leads them to the play-offs, yet they fail to advance past the semi-final stage.

2009: Had come under pressure for mid-table finish a year earlier, but responded by propelling Wolves back into the big league.

2010: Flirts with relegation again, but Wolves come through a tense second half of the season to secure their Premier League status.

2011: Once again, Wolves are involved in a monumental dogfight, only securing their safety on the last day despite their defeat to Blackburn.
