'The real reason? Only Liverpool know' - France star Fekir has cryptic response to question on failed Anfield move
France midfielder Nabil Fekir has spoken for the first time about his aborted transfer to Liverpool, as he suggested the Anfield club need to explain why the move fell through.
Fekir had a medical at Liverpool ahead of the World Cup finals in June, but the transfer was not completed amid reports of complications over an old knee injury.
Now Fekir is set to return to action with Lyon and when asked why he believed the move to Liverpool had collapsed as he pointed an accusing finger at the Merseyside club.
"I heard a lot of things," he said, when asked to explain why he was still a Lyon player. "The real reason? Only Liverpool know.
"These things happen, it's just how it is. We have to move on, it's well in the past now. I have totally come to terms with the failed transfer to Liverpool."
Lyon manager Brune Gensio had suggested earlier this week that Fekir was struggling to come to terms his failure to seal the transfer to Liverpool, as he suggested the player who won the World Cup with France last month needed time to overcome the disappointment.
"It is never easy accepting this kind of situation, when you are very near to signing for a club where you want to go, where you want to reach another level and to give a boost to your career," stated Genesio.
"But it could have been worse for him. He is at Lyon, at a strong club, he is captain of a team who plays in the Champions League.
"This could be a very important season for Nabil. I haven't seen any attitudes or signs that make me think he won't live up to his role the way he did last year.”
