Teenager Sweeney earns Reading deal
Reading have signed teenage defender Pierce Sweeney from League of Ireland side Bray Wanderers.
Sweeney (17) made 12 appearances for Bray last season and is a Republic of Ireland youth international whose schoolboy career was spent at Dublin club Belvedere.
The Dubliner follows in the footsteps of compatriots Shane Long and Kevin Doyle, who arrived Reading from St Patrick's and Cork respectively.
He said: "I'm absolutely delighted, it's a big dream of mine and the best moment of my career so far.
"There are a good few Irish connections here which helped to attract me to the club. There are plenty of players who have come from the League of Ireland and made the step up at this club, breaking into the first team, so it's something I want to aim for."
Former England international Jonathan Woodgate will attempt to revive his injury-blighted career at Middlesbrough after his release by Stoke.
It will be Woodgate's second spell at the club, having spent 19 months there between 2006-08 after ending his three-year stint at Real Madrid.
THE Dutch football association says it has appointed Louis van Gaal as the new national coach to succeed Bert van Marwijk, who quit after the team's terrible performance at the European Championship. Van Gaal has called the appointment "the challenge I have been waiting for".
