Spurs considering a move for unhappy Southampton star
Tottenham are weighing up a move to sign Southampton defender Jose Fonte, as Mauricio Pochettino looks to bolster his defensive options after centre-back Jan Vertonghen picked up an ankle injury last weekend.
Belgian defender Vertonghen faces a spell on the sidelines after a scan confirmed he sustained ankle ligament damage during the 4-0 win against West Bromwich Albion, with the timescale on his recover still being determined.
A lengthy absence for Vertonghen could inspire Pochettino to take a plunge into the transfer market this month, with his old Southampton skipper one of the option on the table.
Yet Tottenham’s hopes of securing a deal to recruit Fonte could be scuppered by Southampton’s reluctance to consider a loan move for their 33-year-old defender, who handed in a transfer request earlier this month.
Spurs would be keen to do a deal that would see Fonte make a temporary switch to White Hart Lane, with the option to make the deal permanent next summer if all parties agree.
Southampton would prefer to off-load their skipper on a permanent deal now, amid reports last week that he has been a disruptive influence around Claude Puel’s first team squad in recent months.
However, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is likely to be reluctant to sanction a permanent deal for a defender at the back end of his career, so any deal would need to be thrashed out with specific clauses inserted.
Liverpool has been mentioned as a possible destination for Fonte, who has fallen down the pecking at Southampton this season after a dip in form following his heroics with Portugal last summer, but the south coast are yet to receive any concrete offers for Fonte with just 13 days left of this month's transfer window.
