Sky Sports have run a poll to crown the best Liverpool or Manchester United player of the Premier League era - and Roy Keane does not even make the top ten.

Even though he never got his hands on the Premier League trophy in an era dominated by United, the enduring affection Liverpool fans have for Steven Gerrard ensured he ran away with the poll that attracted hundreds of thousands of votes.

Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez took second place in the poll, with Cristiano Ronaldo the first ex-Man Utd player to get a look-in as he landed in third place.

The demise in popularity United captain Wayne Rooney is languishing down in 25th place in the poll even though he has scored some iconic goals in matches against Liverpool down the years, while Irishman Denis Irwin sneaks on to the list in 41st place.

The presence of former United captain Keane down in 12th place in the standings will not trouble the Irishman, who would doubtless have little or no interest in a poll that he would have little or no interest in.

Yet United fans are likely to have a few arguments over the identity of the winner, with Gerrard’s status as one of the game’s all-time greats an issue those who call Old Trafford home are always keen to debate at length.

Here is the full top 20 list from the Sky Sports poll, with plenty of talking points created by the order of the names:

1. Steven Gerrard - 49,000 votes

2. Luis Suarez - 40,000

3. Cristiano Ronaldo - 39,000
