Ryan Giggs is being promoted as a potential successor to under-pressure Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal – but our Twitter poll reveals that the club’s fans would rather see Jose Mourinho take over as Old Trafford boss.

Giggs has served as assistant manager to Van Gaal since his arrival at the club in the summer of 2014, with his vocal presence on the touchline in recent matches fuelling talk that he is may be ready to step into the top job sooner rather than later.

Van Gaal is still in position at United after a day of rumours and denials on Tuesday, with suggestions that the Dutchman was about to be sacked or may even hand in his resignation coming to nothing.

Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes also denied that he had agreed a deal for his client to take over at United, amid suggestions that Giggs would be put in charge if a change was made.

Giggs’ former United team-mate Mark Hughes is among those suggesting the Welshman could become Old Trafford boss, as his side prepare to take on Van Gaal’s side on St Stephen’s Day.

“Given his playing career, you would say he's got an outstanding chance,” said Hughes. “His ability as a manager is not clear yet. We don't know because he's not had the opportunity.

“He's getting an education now. He had it obviously being around Sir Alex Ferguson for so many years, and now he's assistant manager.”

While Giggs is a cherished figure at United, the results of our poll provide overwhelming evidence that the club’s fans do not believe this is the moment for the player who set record galore in his playing career to take over.
