Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal did his best to suggest his future is no longer on the line after his side drew 0-0 with Chelsea on Monday - but our Twitter poll suggests the tide of public opinion is still swimming against him.

Van Gaal had hinted after his side's St Stephen's Day defeat at Stoke that he may be tempted to quit as United manager, with his comments fuelling the suspicion that his time at the club was coming to an end.

While United turned in an improved performance against the fallen Premier League champions at Old Trafford, a sixth scoreless draw in his last 14 matches has not convinced Van Gaal's doubters that a corner has been turned.

These were the views of Van Gaal in his BT Sport interview after the Chelsea game, as he insisted there was “not any reason to resign”, despite his side going on an eight-game winless run.

We asked United fans to give us their verdict on what should happen next for Van Gaal, with the results suggesting the vast majority are keen to see the back of the veteran Dutchman sooner rather than later.

The reluctance of some United fans to back the claims of sacked Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho to take over at Old Trafford may be the reason why so many are hoping soon to be out-of-work Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola could fill their managerial void.

The results of this poll certainly confirm that opinion is divided among United fans, while also cementing the suspicion that faith in Van Gaal has eroded beyond repair.
