Patrick Vieira, Steven Gerrard and Mikel Arteta targeted by Toon after Benetiz exit
Newcastle United have drawn up a shortlist of managerial targets, headed by Patrick Vieira, Steven Gerrard and Mikel Arteta.
The club are also keen on Bournemouth's Eddie Howe, with Sean Dyche and Steve Bruce seen as fallback options at this stage.
Newcastle are focusing on younger coaches in their search to replace Rafael Benitez and their main targets are all in employment.
Vieira has done a decent job at Nice in his first year, Gerrard says he wants to stay at Rangers and Arteta is assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Howe has been at Bournemouth since 2012.
However, the club's predicament in the aftermath of Benitez's departure will make every candidate wary.
Newcastle are up for sale, as owner Mike Ashley talks to two interested bidders, which would mean the manager could find himself under a new hierarchy within weeks.
