Norwich close to signing Sunderland’s Michael Turner

NORWICH boss Chris Hughton was today poised to strengthen his squad further as Sunderland defender Michael Turner underwent a medical.

It is understood the 28-year-old headed for East Anglia after the two clubs agreed terms on a deal.

Turner, who arrived at the Stadium of Light from Hull during the summer of 2009, appears to be surplus to requirements on Wearside following the capture of free agent Carlos Cuellar and Titus Bramble's return to contention.

Then manager Steve Bruce snapped up Turner for what looked like a bargain £4 million with the defender having at one point played himself on to the fringes of the England squad.

He made 32 appearances during his first season with the club, but injuries and the arrival of the likes of Brown and former Manchester United team-mate John O'Shea have limited his involvement since.

Nevertheless, he played in the final 20 games of last season with Brown recovering from knee ligament damage.

However, new boss Martin O'Neill is looking to reshape his squad this summer and while his focus for recruitment will be on attacking players, he needs to weed out those members of the current set-up who do not feature in his future plans.
