Martin Skrtel has rejected interest from Inter Milan to pledge his future to Liverpool, according to his agent.

The central defender - one of the mainstays of Brendan Rodgers' squad in the last two seasons - had been unsettled at the club after branding their recent contract offer to him "unacceptable".

Skrtel had one year remaining on his existing contract and had been the subject of interest from rival clubs.

But the Slovakian international, 30, has apparently rejected the chance a possible move to Inter - whose manager, Roberto Mancini, is a long-term admirer of the player - and will instead sign an new deal when he returns from holiday.

"I confess that there were not mere rumours, the interest from Inter was real,” said Skrtel’s agent, Karol Csonto. “But then the deal did not go ahead, there was contact made.

“The player had been thinking about his future and eventually opted to remain at Liverpool."

Liverpool will be relieved to have had some positive news in the transfer market, after seeing Raheem Sterling embroiled in a contract dispute.

They will now turn their attentions to adding to their squad, having already signed Danny Ings from Burnley and James Milner from Manchester City.
