Manchester United new-boy Zlatan Ibrahimovic has made a lavish boast as he prepares to link up with his new team-mates for the first time - amid suggestions that he may be set to claim the No.9 shirt at Old Trafford for the new season.

Ibrahimovic is famed for self-confidence, with the Swede quick to respond to Eric Cantona’s jovial jibes that he will not take his place as the new King of Old Trafford following his high profile arrival in Manchester.

“I have a personal message for Zlatan: You decided to go red. It is the best choice you ever made,” declared Cantona in one of his brilliant Eurosport videos.

“When you walk into the Theatre of Dreams. When you can feel the ghosts of the legends that have been here before.

“When you score that first goal right in front of Stretford End. When you hear the crowd chanting your name.

“When your heart beats so strong that it bursts out of your chest. When you feel that you will love them as much as they will love you. You will know, my friend, that you finally made it home

“Just one last thing, there can only be one King in Manchester. You can be the Prince if you want to. And the number 7 is yours if you are interested. That is my welcome gift to you…The King is gone! Long live the Prince!"

Now Zlatan has offered up an equally humorous response to Cantona’s comments, as he offered this response:

“I admire Cantona and I heard what he said. But I won’t be King of Manchester. I will be God of Manchester,” he is quoted by the FIFA website.

Meanwhile, there are suggestions that Ibrahimovic will take the No.9 shirt that was worn by French striker Anthony Martial at United last season.

Martial posted an Instagram image of himself in what appeared to be the new United kit on Sunday, which showed a No.29 shirt on his red United jersey.

Ibrahimovic wore the No.9 shirt during his spells with Ajax, Juventus and Barcelona and with Wayne Rooney established as United’s No.10, it would appear to be the number Zlatan has picked for what may be just one season at Old Trafford.
