The plaudits were flowing for Henrikh Mkhitaryan after his stunning back-heel finish sealed Manchester United’s 3-1 win against Sunderland.

While TV replays suggested the off-side flag should have been raised to halt Mkhitaryan’s celebrations, his sensational late effort drew gasps of delight from a huge St Stephen’s Day crowd at Old Trafford, with the Armenian midfielder offering up a modest appraisal of his brilliant finish.

“I was expecting the ball in front of me, so the only thing I could do was to hit it with the back heel and I succeed,” said Mkhitaryan, who declared himself fully fit as he return to action after a spell in the treatment room.

Meanwhile United manager Jose Mourinho was oozing with praise for a player who struggled to make his mark at Old Trafford in his first few months with the club after his move from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

“All his career he has scored beautiful goals,” stated Mourinho. “I’m so happy after he come back after his injury and he comes back feeling people at Old Trafford loves him. That’s very important for him.”

It was a goal of the season contender that will be replayed time and again, with the reaction on Twitter predictably euphoric:
