Report in Italy claims Jose Mourinho 'on the brink' of agreeing Manchester United deal
Jose Mourinho is on the brink of agreeing a deal to become Manchester United manager, according to a report on Sky Italia.
Reporter Alessandro Alciato has caused a Twitter stir after claiming Mourinho is close to signing a deal to replace Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford, with the story coming just a day after Pep Guardiola was confirmed as the new manager at Manchester City.
This is the tweet that caused so much excitement on Twitter this evening:
It remains to be seen whether the latest reports linking Mourinho with the United job have any credibility, amid continued suggestions that the Old Trafford hierarchy remain split on whether to appoint the controversial coach who was sacked by Chelsea in December.
Fresh rumours in the Sunday World last weekend suggested Mourinho did not have the full support of the Old Trafford directors, who remain hopeful that current boss Louis van Gaal will revive his side’s fortunes after a troubled few months.
A change in management at United now looks unlikely until the summer at the earliest, with Van Gaal’s current contract set to expire in the summer of 2017.
Meanwhile, former Chelsea and England boss Glenn Hoddle has questioned whether Mourinho has lost his touch in recent times, as he suggested he played a big role in his his own downfall at Stamford Bridge in this BT Sport clip.
