Paul Scholes has urged Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho to sign a striker to replace the veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic and he has identified France forward Antoine Griezmann as the marksman he should splash the cash on.

United have confirmed that they are intending to extend Ibrahimovic’s contract for another season, but Scholes is unsure whether the 35-year-old can continue to shine in the Premier League for another 18 months.

Now the United legend has predicted that Mourinho will look to bolster his forward line at some point in 2017 and he has no doubts who United should be targeting.

Griezmann’s future at Atletico Madrid has been the subject of heated speculation in recent weeks, with reports in Spain in linking the 25-year-old goal getter with a move to the Premier League.

Chelsea and Manchester City are rumoured to be tracking Griezmann, but Scholes believes he could be the ideal candidate to assume the lead striker’s role at United in the next few years.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are battling to nail down the central striking role in United’s first choice line-up this season, but Scholes suggests Mourinho may look to shake up his options in upcoming transfer windows.

“Will they bring another centre forward in,” Scholes asked on BT Sport. “Wayne obviously there to challenge. Is Martial a centre forward? Marcus and Ibrahimovic…there’s four already.

“When this club has been successful, when I was playing, we always had three or four brilliant centre forwards.

“Ibrahimovic is an athlete and a fit lad. I think he’ll be good to have around the place, but if you’re talking about a 36-year-old, as special as he’s been over his career, as special as he is now, I don’t think he should be the main one.

“He’ll be good for someone like Rashford to learn from. If at 36 years of age he’s going to be the main striker then I don’t see that.

“Marcus can take that role. I’m not sure he’s ready for that role yet but there has to be a point where Marcus says ‘Right, I’m after your place, we’re direct rivals. want your place’.”

When asked who Mourinho should target if he looks to add an extra striking options to his ranks, Scholes was quick to name his candidate as he stated: “I think Griezmann would be up there, I think he looks great.”

Monaco forward Tomas Lemar has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid in recent days, amid speculation that the Spanish club is already looking to find replacements for Griezmann.

Atletico Madrid are currently operating under a transfer ban for breaching FIFA rules, which may be a factor when they make a decision over Griezmann’s future next summer.
