Mata ruled out for rest of season
Manchester United have suffered a major injury blow with Juan Mata likely to be ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a groin injury on Thursday.
The Spanish midfielder trained earlier this week but complained of soreness in his groin area.
Mata's lay-off adds to the injury problems at Old Trafford after setbacks to defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling while on international duty.
Other midfield options Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay and Bastian Schweinsteiger have left United this season.
Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and Atletico defender Jose Gimenez have been linked with summer moves to the club, but manager Jose Mourinho knows securing Champions League football next season will enhance their ability to attract players to the club.
"We have things still to play for," Mourinho said ahead of today's match against West Brom. "If we are not fighting for the top four, if we are not fighting to try to win the Europa League, I would say it's a great moment to forget this season and to do everything thinking about next season.
"That's not the case because every match now for us is a big match."
