Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was quick to play down claims that his midfielder Paul Pogba had been offered to Manchester City in the January, yet the latest round of rumours suggest this tales could become a theme of this summer’s transfer window.

City manager Pep Guardiola suggested that Pogba had been offered to his club by the player’s agent Mino Raiola, amid claims that the French international who arrived at United in an £89m deal in the summer of 2016 had fallen out with boss Mourinho.

Both the United boss and Pogba have denied their relationship has broken down in recent weeks, yet widespread reports in the UK media suggesting Pogba may be eyeing up another big money more this summer continued to circulate in recent weeks.

“There is no problem with Mourinho,” said Pogba last month. “It’s not me who picks the team. Ask the coach if you want to know why I play less. I respect his choices. ”It’s too early to talk about a departure from United.”

Mourinho has also played down suggestions that Pogba’s future may lie away from United, as he suggested his relationship with the player is not under strain.

“I can speak on Paul’s behalf without any kind of problem. He accepts he’s not been playing well in the last few matches, but that’s all,” stated the United boss.

“It’s a big lie that our relationship is not good. It’s a big lie that we don’t communicate. It’s a big lie that we don’t agree with his position and his dynamic within the team.

“The team needs him at a good level and when he isn’t the team is not as good. So be objective and say what we all know - in the last couple of matches he didn’t play well. Period.

“The majority of the things you can read and listen to - don’t be nice, be objective and say lies.”

Despite those positive comments from player and manager, there are now there are fresh reports that Raiola has been in contact with City, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid as he assesses Pogba’s next move, after a season that has seen the French international struggle to justify his price tag in Mourinho’s team.

Pogba has been dropped for keys games and regularly substituted over the course of this season, with Mourinho struggling to find space in his team for a player who has failed to nail down a favoured position in his line-up.

Now the debate over his future at United is set to gather momentum, with his high profile agent mentioned in several UK newspapers on Wednesday for his role in making tentative enquiries over Pogba’s potential interest in a move away from Old Trafford.
