Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has urged Luke Shaw to keep fighting for his place in his team, as he revealed why the young full-back has struggled to even get onto his substitutes bench in recent weeks.
Shaw has struggled with a series of injuries this season and has been criticised in pubic by Mourinho after he declared himself unfit to play in a Premier League game at Swansea in November.
The United boss also questioned Shaw’s performance in the 3-1 defeat at Watford in September, with reports suggesting he is planning to off-load the 21-year-old next summer.
Shaw’s agent was quick to dismiss reports that he was losing patience with his wait for a first team start at United, with Mourinho now offering some clarity on the issue.
“He has to work and wait,” said the United boss. “Against Watford I wanted one defender on the bench and the defender is someone who can play in more than one position.
“(Matteo) Darmian can play left-back, right-back and an emergency central defender for us so my choice was Darmian.”
Shaw will hope to play some part in United’s cup games this week, with Thursday’s Europa League tie against Saint-Etienne followed by an FA Cup clash against Blackburn on Sunday.
