Liverpool legend John Aldridge has offered up a surprising Premier League title prediction - but he couldn’t resist a stinging jab directed at former Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson as he predicted the good times are about to roll once again at Old Trafford.

Aldo is backing Jose Mourinho to inspire instant success in his first season as United manager, as he tipped 20-time English champions to be crowned as Premier League kings once again in the upcoming season.

Yet he suggested that confirmation of Paul Pogba’s imminent €105m return to United was a hammer blow to the legacy of Ferguson, who allowed the French midfielder to leave Old Trafford for nothing four years ago after a fall-out with the player’s agent Mino Raiola.

“We haven’t had too many chances to stick the boot in to Alex Ferguson over the last quarter of a century, but you have to say the legacy of one of the great managers has taken a beating over this Pogba situation, Aldridge told sundayworld.com.

“Even if Fergie had a fallout with Pogba’s agent back in 2012, you cannot allow a player of that quality to walk away for nothing and the scale of his error has been highlighted with the cash Man United had to pay to get him back.

“What a cock-up. This has to go down as the most expensive mistake in football history. For all the success Ferguson enjoyed during his time as United manager, he now has this giant stain on his record.

“Fergie’s reputation will take a further battering if Pogba lives up to his billing and takes the Premier League by storm and while they are not yet a proven team, Mourinho is a manager who tends to inspire instant success.”

Aldridge lavished praise on United’s new star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and suggested they finally have the right manager in place to bring success back to the club after three miserable seasons with David Moyes and then Louis van Gaal in charge.

“Mourinho is going for quick-fire success by signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh

Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba, because he knows that he is at a club that demands trophies every season. He needs to deliver from day one or he will be screwed.

“Well, it pains me to say it, but I think United have the right manager in place now and I’m backing him to guide them to the title this season, even though I believe my old club Liverpool can give Mourinho’s men a run for their money.

“I’d be delighted to see Mourinho fall flat on his face at Old Trafford, I don’t see it happening.

“A title winning party at Old Trafford next May...what a horrible prospect that is!”
