'If anyone is to blame for this it's me' - Nemanja Matic says he was Man United's worst performer at Everton
Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has claimed he is ready to accept the blame for his side's lamentable display as they lost 4-0 at Everton on Sunday.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted after the game that he didn't know whether some of his squad had the right mentality to play for the club, with the club's former players among those quick to condemn underperforming star names like Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.
Yet it was experienced international midfielder Matic who stepped forward to insist he should take a large portion of the blame for the display at Goodison Park, as he offered up an honest interview to beIN Sports.
"It's one of the worst games for me personally and for the team," he stated. "I think we deserved to lose. We did not play how we wanted to play. It's hard for me to speak about. It's not for the young players. I'm one of the most senior players. If anyone is to blame for this it's me.
"When you win the battle in midfield it's easier to play. We didn't do that. It's shameful. We have to look for the mirror, everyone has to see where he made mistakes and what he must do better.
"The more guilty are the more experienced players and in this case it's me. It's difficult to answer what is wrong.
"Our approach to the game was not good, everyone needs to take responsibility during the game, with the ball, without the ball, everyone needs to run more then our quality will show."
Solskjaer has hinted he is ready to make big changes at United this summer, with his under-performing players now facing a crucial test of their commitment and qualities when they take on Manchester City in a crucial Premier League game on Wednesday night.
