Is Louis van Gaal the king of mixed messages? One week, Manchester United are title contenders, the next, he needs three years... here is some evidence of the changing faces of Louis van Gaal.
Here are some direct quotes from the Manchester United manager to prove that there seems to be a lot of undulations in his expectations.
October 3, ahead of their 2-1 win over Everton.
"I didn't have to come here to Manchester United. They asked me."
"And I will take United back into the Champions League yes, but not at once.
"There is a trajectory and a process of three years. I have signed a three-year contract. Believe me, I shall finish that."
October 20, after United's 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion
"That's possible (to catch Chelsea) but difficult to say because then I am arrogant. But I have done it a lot of times.
"It is two points lost. I think we were the better team and I am very disappointed by the result. We were two times behind but I don't think West Bromwich Albion created too many chances.
"We gave the two goals away and we created four chances in the first half and seven in the second. We dominated the game.
"That's what I want as a coach and as a manager but the manager doesn't want a result like 2-2.
"I have said to my players I cannot be happy. I am happy about our play style but not the result."
October 26, after 1-1 draw with Chelsea
"We kept together and I think we deserved it. I have seen that we could have beaten Chelsea.
"I'm saying that nearly every game, but this is against Chelsea, who are a top team, and we were at least equal. I've said to the players we could have won, but nevertheless we didn't and that's our fault.
"When you can do that against the best team in this league at this moment it is a good sign."
October 31, before the City game
"Abroad, we have more fans and followers on social media.
"So it's like that. Also, Bayern Munich is also the biggest club of Germany. The same thing for Barcelona and Real Madrid in Spain. It takes a long time for City to reach that level."
November 2, after Man City defeat
"Despite the injuries, we are close - like with Chelsea last week and this week - but not close enough and we need to make steps to improve."
November 7, today
"I feel lousy.
"I feel, myself, very lousy for the fans firstly, but also for the board because they have a great belief in me and my players and my staff and when you have 13 points out of 10 matches you are not doing well.
"We are in a process and that process shall take more than one year.
"It shall take three years, I hope, because that is always dependable from a lot of aspects, but I think it shall be and we shall make it happen that we shall win a lot of matches in a row."
It appears nonsensical now, as Radamel Falcao battles for form and fitness at Manchester United, but the Colombian forward harboured genuine hopes of appearing at the World Cup this summer, just five months after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury.
