Shakhtar Donetsk attacking star Fred has confirmed that his advisers are in advanced talks over a transfer to Manchester United, but he also hinted there was still a chance he could sign for their local rivals Manchester City.

United have been heavily linked with a move to sign the 25-year-old Brazilian in recent days, with Old Trafford chiefs keen to wrap up the transfer before Fred heads to the World Cup finals next month.

He will be in the north west of England next week as Brazil take on Croatia in a World Cup warm-up game at Anfield, with talks set to be finalised by a negotiating team that includes Fred’s adviser Gilberto Silva, who was once a key man in the Arsenal midfield.

“Talks have been at an advanced stage since January, if I am not mistaken,” stated Fred, in comments reported by ESPN.

“There was a possible transfer to City. Shortly after, both clubs, City and United talked with Shakhtar and with my agents about a possible transfer.

“And if I am not mistaken, there was news of a strong bid by United. But I am focused solely on the World Cup.

“My agents are taking care of this, led by Gilberto Silva. He’s a very calm guy, one that I give all the freedom (to make the right decision), as he is someone I deeply trust

“It’s an honour to be on the radar of great European coaches. They are two great coaches from Manchester, as well as our national head coach. But I believe I have a versatility on the pitch and I’m a multi-skilled player, being able to play in both midfield positions.

“I believe that some coaches need that with their teams. I think that this grabs the attention of some coaches and I think it is an important point for me.”

Shakhtar Donetsk president Rinat Akhmetov has confirmed that his club are preparing to sell Fred, after they rejected a big offer for his services from Manchester City last summer.

“We’ll get exactly the amount he costs,” Akhmetov told the Shakhtar website. ”This will be a market price, the fair price, and it will be beneficial both for the club inviting Fred and for us. That is, I can somewhat feel that Fred will be more expensive than Fernandinho and Teixeira.

“If Fred won Brazil caps and go to the World Cup, this indicates that Shakhtar has gathered a very strong and quality player. We will sell Fred to a good and strong club, do not doubt it. For how much? I cannot say so now.

“You know that we had negotiations with Manchester City this winter and there was an official offer, a very big figure. They offered us around €50m for Fred. And we had enough strength to reject it.”
