Manchester United update: Luke Shaw hopeful of weekend return against old club
Louis van Gaal is hopeful of having Luke Shaw available to face former club Southampton on Sunday, despite the Manchester United defender suffering another ankle scare during the FA Cup victory at Yeovil.
Shaw, a £28 million arrival from St Mary’s last summer, was substituted at half-time during the third round tie - which United eventually won 2-0 - after aggravating the ankle problem which had kept him sidelined for six weeks prior to his return to action against Tottenham on December 28.
The England left-back has endured an injury-ravaged first season at Old Trafford, with hamstring and ankle problems restricting him to just 10 first-team appearances for United.
But it is understood that his withdrawal at Huish Park was a precautionary measure and that tests have revealed no new ligament damage for the 19-year-old.
Shaw will be monitored at United’s Aon Training Centre this week, with Van Gaal mindful of the need to safeguard against further injury, but the defender is expected to win his battle to be fit to play against Southampton.
Daley Blind, the Dutch international midfielder, is also in contention to return to the squad after training with the first team over the past two weeks.
Blind has been out of action since suffering medial ligament damage during Holland’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Latvia in November.
