Luke Shaw has admitted he was not as fit as he should have been when he arrived at Manchester United from Southampton in a £27m deal last summer.

Shaw struggled to maintain his fitness levels and was affected by niggling injuries in a disappointing first season at United, but he has spent the summer trying to learn from his mistakes of a year ago.

Having spent a chunk of this summer's break working on his fitness with United coaching staff in Dubai, the 20-year-old has high hopes for the new season as he looks to cement a place in Louis van Gaal's starting line-up.

"I have come back to this pre-season in much better shape than I did last season," Shaw told the United website.

"The rest has done me really well, the trip to Dubai helped also and I feel good. I wanted to make sure that I came back in good shape. I am feeling good and I’m ready for the games.

“As a team we all get individual programmes for the summer. On my time off, I went to Dubai with Adnan Januzaj and one of the coaches.

"It was not a thing that I was told to do, it was just something that me and Adnan chose to do, to go out there and come back in shape for when we start the pre-season training.

“Of course I had my time off, I had a few weeks to rest and recover so when we went to Dubai that was to bring our fitness levels back up. Me and Adnan really enjoyed it. Hopefully it was good for both of us.”

Shaw suggested United's new signings Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Mempis Depay and Matteo Darmian have slotted into Van Gaal's squad with ease, as he talked up his side's hopes for the new season.

“The new lads are settling in well,” he said. “Obviously with Morgan I know him really well from Southampton and it is nice to see him here.

"We are a good bunch of lads here and we welcome people really easily, so I hope they are enjoying it and looking forward to the games too.

“Of course I spoke to him about the club beforehand, but every player knows what Manchester United is about.

"I made sure I told him everything about it and how much he would love it. I think he has made the right decision to come to Manchester United and I am sure he will prove everything right.

"Memphis is around my age and it nice to have another player come in. You could say we have got on really well but it is just a team thing really.

"With him playing on the left, it’s a good thing. He’s a tank! You can see in the pictures he has got a massive physique. He is small but stocky and strong, and quick, so he has been sharp in training.

"Like I said, he’s the same as me, I think he is just looking forward to just getting the games under way.”
