Louis van Gaal rejected chance to bring Ronaldo back to Man United - reports
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal "rejected the chance" to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford after being offered the Real Madrid star, according to a Spanish journalist.
The Sunday Mirror reports that the Red Devils boss turned down the chance to bring the Portuguese star back to the club he spent seven years at before leaving for La Liga in 2009 despite the player himself repeatedly saying he is more than happy in Spain.
Earlier this month the player's agent Jorge Mendes said that it was unlikely that Ronaldo would return to Old Trafford anytime soon as he would command a transfer fee of at least £300 million.
Ronaldo, who joined Real Madrid from Manchester United for a world-record fee of £80m in 2009, was linked with a return to Old Trafford last year, but Mendes said "he will not leave Real Madrid".
"If for any reason the club decide to sell him tomorrow for £300 million, someone will pay," Mendes said in an interview with BBC Sport.
After winning his second Ballon d'Or award last month, Mendes claimed his client is greatest sportsman in history. "He is the best player ever in the world. He is the best sportsman ever so you cannot compare because it is impossible to find someone like him."
