Louis van Gaal has revealed what formation he will play this season
Louis van Gaal has revealed how he will utilise his new players in this year's Premier League campaign.
The Manchester United manager has signed attacking players in Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay leaving fans with one question - where will they fit in?
Van Gaal approached their pre-season games with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Depay taking up the number 10 role behind Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young and Juan Mata on the flanks. That left Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin forming the central midfield partnership.
"That the midfielder is [sometimes] in front of the striker is not bad because I think you do need variation in your attack," said van Gaal, in a press conference following the final tour match against PSG.
"I like that and I ask for that, especially from Memphis. It can also be Carrick or Schweinsteiger or Schneiderlin once in a while but mostly Memphis. It depends on our opponents."
The United manager was asked what formation he was leaning towards for the Reds' first Premier League game against Tottenham.
"More or less 4-3-3," he answered.
"We played that already last season, in the second half of the season, and I have said that is the system I want to use. We played in our shape [on tour] and played how we have to play. That's also where I have been very satisfied.”
