Liverpool star Roberto Firmino charged with drink driving on Christmas Eve
Roberto Firmino has been charged with drink driving by Merseyside police after he was pulled over on Christmas Eve in Liverpool city centre.
According to a report in the Liverpool Echo, the Brazilian international was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The 25-year-old is due to appear at Liverpool City Magistrates Court later this week.
A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “Merseyside Police has charged a 25-year-old man with drink driving after his car was stopped in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of Saturday, December 24 2016.
“Roberto Firmino, from Liverpool, will appear at Liverpool City Magistrates Court [later this week].”
If found guilty, Firmino is likely to face a driving ban and a fine.
Merseyside Police have also confirmed that Firmino’s court hearing will take place on Saturday 31 December – the same day as Liverpool’s Premier League clash against Manchester City which kicks off at 17:30 GMT – and raises serious doubts over his inclusion in the New Year’s Eve clash.
He has been a huge part of the attacking prowess shown by Jurgen Klopp's side this season and is finding his feet at Anfield after his £29m move from Hoffenheim in 2015.
He also has five goals in just 13 appearances for his country.
Firmino is in the Liverpool squad for the Premier League clash with Stoke City at Anfield tomorrow night.
