Liverpool are hoping to sign young MLS defender Alphonso Davies - with former Irish international Andy O'Brien playing a key role.

O'Brien recently took up a scouting role with the Merseysiders and according to Canadian newspaper The Province, he has been dispatched to keep tabs on Vancouver Whitecaps' Davies.

At the age of just 15 (he turned 16 next month) Davies has become hot property with Manchester United also said to be interested in securing the signature of the youngster.

Davies made MLS history earlier this year when he made his debut in the Ameridan top flight at the age of just 15.

“O’Brien was in town for the Caps alumni game and wouldn’t comment on specific players, although he did watch the Colorado match and the mid-week win over Central FC,” said the report in the Province.
